Good or bad influence? Technology as we all know can either have a good or bad influence on anything. Be it lifestyle, business and education. Based on education, technology has had a great impact on today’s society and learning community. Some people however disagree that it serves as a benefit Just because they believe that teens of today spend most of their time on social networks like twitter and Facebook. Little do they know that these social networks are also a way of keeping the youth up-to-date with current affairs.
These social networks broaden their scope of thinking and help them learn how to analyze issues by weighing options and also thinking of possible outcomes in every situation. After all, majority of teachers agree that “the internet and digital technologies such as social networking sites, cell phones and texting, generally facilitates teens’ personal expression and creativity, broadening the audience for their written material, and encouraging teens to write more often in more formats than may have been the case in prior generations. Kristen Purcell, Judy Buchanan, Linda Friedrich). Also, a lot of teachers these days have interactive classes online to help students adapt to the modern age of technology and expand the style of teaching. Teachers use things like blogs, links, and even special webpages to help students learn a better way which will make understanding much easier. For example, modern toys for little kids are mostly educative ones that allow these kids to learn faster even while playing. Children enjoy learning because it is more interactive.
Kids have tablets that talk to them which are actually a very good thing as it even teaches them the right pronunciation of words and how to be polite like saying “please” and “thank you”. Learning and understanding something is much easier when I Just go online and watch videos and listen to discussions. On the other hand, it is quite obvious that technology also has a bad impact on some of the students too. Students’ minds are getting adapted to the fact that the correct spelling of words is no more necessary as they always have their spell-check on.
Day by day, I get more comfortable with digital language such as “idc” for “l don’t care” and “b/c” for “because” since they are always used on social networks. Some students also do not even hesitate to think much further as the internet has the answers to everything. Plagiarism is taken to the next level because students tend to get so lazy and refuse to think for themselves. They’d rather Just copy and paste from online since that’s what their minds have adapted to. This is where the responsibilities of educators come in.
No matter what is said about technology, we cannot change the fact that it is here to stay and has become a part of our lives. The question is not whether it is good or bad, but rather how can educators make sure that it is used for the right purposes to give students a better learning experience. Teachers, parents and society need to know how to make the best use of technology to improve literacy and it is their responsibility to guide the little ones on the right path to taking advantage of this modern style of learning and making the best out of it.
I am a victim f every single negative effect on technology as stated. However, I can personally say that it has had a huge impact on me and the way I think. This is not only educationally but in my lifestyle too. I see things from different perspectives and I’m so much better at reading and writing. I never liked reading books but now I find myself reading ten page articles online Just because it feels different and is way better than having a book in my hand. I believe the effects that technology have on people are based on their own choice. You either take the good ones or the bad ones.
