Dandily Shah Wednesday, June 5th Planning: What is a Pop Bottle Rocket? A pop bottle rocket uses a AL pop bottle, which then, you fill up the AL pop bottle with water, and then with air, air pressure is created, and when you launch it Newton’s law happens. A lot of people put designs on their rockets, such as mine I did not leave it plain, I added cardboard, fins, color, nose etc. To make the rocket fly high and far away, you have to understand on how to make your rocket aerodynamic.
Below his is an example on how a water rocket can be launched. Observations from prototypes: (Prototype rockets are much smaller and use ml pop bottles) I tried to make my prototype rocket have a pointy nose, Just because it can be aerodynamic, pointy nose rockets fly great, it’s Just after the rocket has crashed nose down, it will fail to protect the egg because the landing will be harsh and we are supposed to protect the egg on the actual rocket. After, I put 1 or 2 small rocks into the nose cone before gluing it on because then it will have a high center of mass which will make it actually fly like a octet.
Firstly, gather materials for building pop bottle rocket 2. Measure the amount of the cardboard sheet needed to wrap bottle 3. Cut cardboard sheet using box cutter 4. Wrap cardboard sheet around AL bottle and apply hot glue on edge of cardboard sheet so that the cardboards are fully wrapped around 5. Draw 8 pieces of strips 6. First cut out the first 4 pieces, then glue them together from the center, bend them so they fit your rocket 7. Then glue them on 8. Repeat steps 5-7 but instead glue the other 4 inside out 9.
This will make you a parabolic nose 10. Now that you have created the pieces you need with cardboard, draw wings onto foam cord 1 1 . After you have drawn the wings onto foam cord, use the box cutter or scissors to cut out 4 pieces of the wings 12. Once after all compartments have been cut properly, apply hot glue to wings, and stick them onto the cardboard bottom side 13. For egg compartment, use hot glue to glue 2 sponge on the interior of rocket located at the upper region.
Also apply 1 sponge to the interior of the nose cone, then apply cotton balls, and cover it will bubble wrap 14. Insert egg into egg compartment and launch 15. Add more bubble wrap Rocket Design Considerations: Throughout the process of creating the pop bottle rocket I had many changes to go tit my design instead. For example the nose cone was my first choice but my 2nd was the parabolic nose for the rocket. While observing my peers working on parabolic, the tests showed them that the parabolic nose was more bouncy which made me regret my decision.
So in the end I picked a parabolic nose. For my wings I used 4 fins, which provided great support and drag for my rocket. The height of my rocket was exactly the amount of the one in my design, but the colors and design I changed because I did not like it very much. The weight of my rocket did not seem center of mass which was good. I filled the water into my rocket up to half, so that it builds up some air pressure where the air is.
The color choice I went with my rocket was black and grey because those are my favorite colors, and in the end my rocket became an eye catcher because of the color combination. Here is my rocket; Egg Compartment Design Considerations: here is a close up on the fins; I had a large amount of considerations for my egg. For one, I would add cushioning to prevent my egg from breaking. I considered adding things such as cotton balls, bubble wrap, or even foam. Which I did in the end, I wanted to make the egg in a eight place, so it wouldn’t move at all.
I put the egg compartment at the top side of my rocket, because that was the only place to place it, and plus the parabolic nose bounces, so it can maybe make my egg survive. Results: In the end my rocket flew high, and went far (It went slightly ahead of the soccer post) but the egg broke. My egg compartment was not strong enough for the crash. My rocket did not break only one of the strips came off, so I think it was a good design and it was aerodynamic but the egg compartment was weak. Here is a picture of my rocket after the crash;
