1984 Essay

“The aim of the High is to remain where they are. The aim of the Middle is to change places with the High. The aim of the Low??”is to abolish all distinctions and create a society which all men shall be equal” (201). Living in a world where everything from books to television is controlled by the government, George Orwell’s 1984 transforms the motives of a democratic and equal society into a society of socialism and unjust ways. Of course, such matters as history and information would take years to change and would be an ongoing process; nevertheless, in such a society where the government controls Just about everything manipulating and maintaining information would be a seamless process. The government states, “Who controls the past controls the future: who controls the present controls the past” (34). The Party controls every source of information, rewriting the content of history within newspapers, books, television, movies, etc. or the socialist group’s own needs. Not allowing individuals to keeps records of their past, the Party controls the memories of people as they remain unable to remember past events and occurrences. Even a small diary containing one’s personal feelings and opinions would be destroyed or edited as shown when Winston wrote down events, opinions, and feelings about the Party. By controlling the present the Party is able to manipulate the past. And in controlling the past, the Party is able to Justify all of its actions in the present.

In addition to the control of history nd information, the use of advanced technology by the Party plays a big role in the construction of the book 1984. Telescreens (high-tech television projectiles that traced voice and sensed emotion) were used by the Party to exploit members of thoughtcrime and other offenses against the Party. “It was terribly dangerous to let [your] thoughts wander when you were in any public place or within range of a telescreen”(62). Additionally, the Party employs complicated mechanisms (similar to computers) to exert large-scale control on economic production and media.

Lastly, he Party uses torture devices that inflict physical and psychological harm and manipulation. 1984 demonstrates how the use of technology can be used to cause destruction if put in the hands of the wrong people. Furthermore, both technology and the control of history and information add to one of the main theme shown in 1984; the use of psychological manipulation to gain control. The Party overwhelms the minds of people and the mind can’t create independent thoughts as it has little room to do so.

Propaganda designed to make failure and deficiencies constantly treams through the telescreens. The telescreens also monitor behavior and posters throughout cities remind citizens “BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING Children are brainwashed at an early age; they Join a group called the Junior Spies and eventually turn in their parents and other adults for thoughtcrime. Forcing individuals to abstain from sexual practices, the Party tears apart the family life of all citizens. The Party stirs up fury which distracts many citizens during such practices as Hate Week and the Two Minutes Hate.

Without a doubt the Party’s manipulation changed the people and gave the Party complete and utter control of society. Overall, the Party states “War is Peace. Freedom is Slavery. Ignorance is Strength”(4). The Partys slogan undermines society and traps people in a world where everything that ever existed is false, and everything that never existed is real. Any existing sanity was wiped out by the use of falsifying information, using technology to spy and control, and finally the use of psychological manipulation to regulate a person’s mind.
